In 2018, Rob found himself addressing an audience of eight hundred people in Johannesburg, South Africa. A few months later, he was in Cape Town, invited by Ashley, brainstorming about innovative work methods. At UCT, Ashley was spearheading a transition from paper-based processes to a paperless environment and was in need of a collaborative partner. This collaboration between two inspirational leaders from different parts of the world was driven by a shared vision of data-driven work.
However, the COVID-19 pandemic brought unexpected challenges. Rob's Cape Town dream was postponed, and Ashley, pursuing his entrepreneurial aspirations, resigned from the university during the pandemic. Despite these setbacks, their belief in their vision remained strong, and they recently had the pleasure of helping a university in the northern Limpopo Province, South Africa, make its financial department more future-proof.
Happiness in their work and endeavors remains their top priority. There have been times when they've felt trapped in a 'golden cage', but their desire for fulfillment drove them to seek change and explore new avenues. Now, they want to share their story with you.
Imagine a journey through South Africa's diverse and dynamic context, where complexity is demystified through data. This book draws inspiration from the South African national rugby team, the Springboks, whose journey to World Cup glory in 2019 and 2023 is powerfully depicted in the documentary Chasing the Sun. Just as the Springboks' success was built on resilience, strategic planning, and teamwork, data-driven work requires a cultural shift, strategic vision, and collaboration at all levels.
Through this lens, the authors explore how organisations in South Africa can harness the power of data to achieve success, much like the Springboks.
Data as a Compass is a practical guide aimed at helping organisations achieve success and workplace satisfaction through data-driven methods. Inspired by the teamwork and resilience of South Africa’s national rugby team, the Springboks, the book highlights the transformative power of data in improving work processes, decision-making, and operational outcomes.
The Cloverleaf Model :
The authors introduce the cloverleaf model, which integrates four essential components:
- People
 - Processes
 - Technology
 - Culture

This model guides organisations through the complexities of change, demonstrating how these elements are interdependent. Focusing on data-driven strategies can enhance efficiency, foster innovation, and increase competitiveness in today’s fast-evolving business environment.
The Role of Leadership :
Leadership plays a central role in cultivating a data-driven culture. The book underscores the shift towards prioritising employee welfare, flexibility, and remote work, especially in the post-pandemic world. Effective leaders are encouraged to combine data with intuition, fostering environments that promote team autonomy, psychological safety, and open communication to ensure organisational success.
Learning from Successful Organisations :
Data as a Compass stresses the importance of learning from other successful data-driven organisations. It provides real-world examples from sectors such as healthcare, finance, and education, illustrating how data can be harnessed to enhance customer satisfaction, drive innovation, and establish a culture of continuous improvement.
Practical Guidance :
The book offers practical, step-by-step guidance on implementing data-driven strategies:
- Forming the Right Teams: Starting with small, clear objectives and fostering diversity within teams.
 - Choosing Appropriate Tools: Selecting the right technological infrastructure.
 - Developing Action Plans: Ongoing communication and planning are key.
